Self-portrait

Year: 1920

Description: Hermann-Paul turned fifty-six in 1920. He had seen the Germans halted at the gates of Paris. And stood in line for food while the country was torn asunder. When the stress of war subsided, Hermann-Paul was an old man. His hair was gray and he needed glasses to see the canvas. Life was normal in 1920 and peace would last for twenty years. But he would not survive a second war. Hermann-Paul died in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer two days before the capitulation.

Provenance: Private Collection
